『オズの魔法使い』と『ウィキッド』：名作が新たな視点で生まれ変わる
『オズの魔法使い』は、1900年にライマン・フランク・ボームによって書かれた有名な物語です。物語は、カンザスの農場に住む少女ドロシーが、強力な竜巻によって愛犬トトとともに魔法の国オズへと運ばれるところから始まります。元の世界に戻るためには、エメラルドの都に住む「オズの魔法使い」を見つける必要があります。
旅の途中で、ドロシーは3人の特別な仲間に出会います。脳が欲しいカカシ、心が欲しいブリキの木こり、勇気が欲しい臆病なライオンです。彼らは一緒に黄色いレンガの道を進みながら、さまざまな困難や敵と対峙します。その中には邪悪な西の魔女もいます。しかし、最後には3人とも、自分たちが求めていたものをすでに持っていたことに気づきます。そしてドロシーは、自分がもともと家に帰る力を持っていたことを知り、魔法の銀の靴を使って元の世界へ戻るのです。
この物語は、1939年にジュディ・ガーランド主演の映画『オズの魔法使』によってさらに有名になりました。この映画では、原作の銀の靴がルビーの靴に変更されるなど、いくつかの違いがあります。この「オズの魔法使い」の物語は何度も語り直されていますが、その中でも特に興味深いバージョンが、2003年にブロードウェイで初演されたミュージカルを基にした新作映画『ウィキッド』です。
『オズの魔法使い』と『ウィキッド』の違い
『ウィキッド』は、「オズの魔法使い」に登場する西の魔女が、どのようにして”悪役”と呼ばれるようになったのかを描いた物語です。彼女の本名はエルファバ。生まれつき緑色の肌を持ち、賢く優しい性格ですが、見た目が違うという理由で人々から偏見を持たれます。彼女は「シズ大学」に通い、そこで美しく人気者のグリンダと出会います。最初は反発し合う二人ですが、次第に友情を育んでいきます。
『ウィキッド』の最大の特徴は、魔女側の視点から物語が語られることです。エルファバは決して本当の悪ではなく、不正と戦おうとする人物として描かれます。一方、『オズの魔法使い』では偉大な存在として描かれたオズの魔法使いが、『ウィキッド』ではむしろ悪役として登場します。また、グリンダのキャラクターも大きく異なります。『オズの魔法使い』では常に親切で賢い魔女として描かれますが、『ウィキッド』では最初は自己中心的でありながら、次第に成長していきます。
結末も異なります。『オズの魔法使い』では、西の魔女はドロシーに水をかけられて死んでしまいます。しかし、『ウィキッド』では、エルファバは実は生きていて、恋人フィエロと共に逃げるという可能性が示唆されます。この変更によって、物語はより奥深く、感動的なものとなっています。
どちらの作品も「友情」や「本当の自分を見つけること」というテーマを共有していますが、『オズの魔法使い』が子ども向けのシンプルな童話なのに対し、『ウィキッド』はより細かい設定と感情の深みを加えています。オリジナル版と新しいバージョン、どちらを好むかは人それぞれですが、どちらも「見た目ではなく、心の中を見ることが大切」という大事なメッセージを私たちに伝えてくれる物語です。
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and Wicked: A Classic Story with a New Twist

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a famous story written by L. Frank Baum in 1900. It tells the adventure of a young girl named Dorothy, who lives on a farm in Kansas. One day, a powerful tornado carries her and her dog, Toto, to a magical land called Oz. To return home, she must find the Wizard of Oz, who lives in the Emerald City.
On her journey, Dorothy meets three special friends: the Scarecrow, who wants a brain; the Tin Man, who wants a heart; and the Cowardly Lion, who wants courage. Together, they travel the Yellow Brick Road, facing challenges and enemies, including the Wicked Witch of the West. In the end, the three friends learn that they already have the qualities they had wanted. Dorothy discovers that she had the power to go home all along by clicking her magical silver shoes.
Many people know this story from the famous 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz, starring Judy Garland. This film made some changes to the original book, such as turning Dorothy’s silver shoes into ruby slippers. The story of Oz has been retold many times, but one of the most interesting versions is Wicked, a new movie based on the 2003 Broadway musical.
Differences Between The Wizard of Oz and Wicked
Wicked tells the story of the Wicked Witch of the West before she became the villain in The Wizard of Oz. Her real name is Elphaba, and she was born with green skin. Although she is kind and intelligent, people judge her because she looks different. She goes to school at Shiz University, where she meets Glinda, a beautiful and popular girl. At first, they do not like each other, but they eventually become friends.
One big difference between Wicked and The Wizard of Oz is that Wicked tells the story from the Witch’s point of view. It shows that Elphaba is not truly evil—she only wants to fight against injustice. The Wizard of Oz, who seems like a great leader in the original story, is actually a villain in Wicked. Another major difference is Glinda’s character. In The Wizard of Oz, she is always kind and wise, but in Wicked, she is selfish at the beginning and then learns to become a better person.
The ending of Wicked is also different. In The Wizard of Oz, the Witch dies when Dorothy throws water on her. However, Wicked suggests that Elphaba may still be alive and escapes with her true love, Fiyero. This makes the story more complex and emotional.
Both the original book and new movie share themes of friendship and finding one’s true self. The Wizard of Oz is a simple fairy tale written for children, while Wicked adds more details and deeper emotions. Whether you prefer the original or the new version, both are great stories that remind us to look beyond appearances and understand what is in people’s hearts.
